How Do You Calculate LED Shop Light Lumen Requirements?

A professional layout should validate the result at the working plane.

Planning example, not a universal rule: the 30-35 lm/ft² range and the figures below are retained as a simple early-stage estimate. Do not apply them as a fixed target for every retail or workshop project. Use a lighting calculation and the selected fixture's published photometric data before procurement.

1. Find the Shop Area

For a shop measuring 20 ft by 30 ft:

20 ft × 30 ft = 600 ft²

2. Estimate Total Lumens

Using the source example of 35 lm/ft² as an initial planning figure:

600 ft² × 35 lm/ft² = 21,000 lm

3. Estimate Fixture Quantity

For a hypothetical 20 W fixture rated at 100 lm/W:

20 W × 100 lm/W = 2,000 lm
21,000 ÷ 2,000 = 10.5, or about 11 fixtures

How Do You Plan a Fluorescent-to-LED Retrofit?

First identify the actual lumen output of the installed fittings from their labels or data sheets.
